Virtual Therapy
VT
We have developed and tested several immersive VR programs for the treatment of anxiety disorders and eating disorders: Panic disorder and agoraphobia (PDA); Fear of flying; Claustrophobia; Acrophobia; Post-traumatic stress disorder; Body Image in Eating Disorders.

VR therapy is one of our main lines of research.
From 1998 we have developed immersive VR software for the application of exposure in the treatment of several specific phobias and PDA.

Some of our virtual enviroments are:
  • A virtual hotel room, a virtual airport and a virtual plane for flying phobia.
  • A virtual house with an elevator and several rooms with different sizes and closure possibilities for claustrophobia.
  • Several clinically significant situations for agoraphobia (tunnel, underground train, bus, mall, house) with the possibility of inducing bodily sensations like pounding heart, breath difficulties, etc. to conduct interoceptive exposure.
  • We also have a VR environment for the treatment of body image distortions. The user can model her body image and correct the distortions in different scenarios.
Our softwares for the treatment of phobias and eating disorders run in PCs, and we use a HMD and a tracker system to immerse the user in the VR world.

We have also developed a virtual reality environment (EMMA’s room) to work in the processing of emotions.

We are testing its efficacy in the treatment of stress-related disorders, like posttraumatic stress disorder and adjustment disorders.
EMMA’s room is a flexible virtual environment who allows customizing the virtual world for the needs of each patient by means of different symbols, music, objects and scenarios.
In this case we use a PC, a Powerwall screen, projectors, and a pad.
